housewarming vs houseware shower?

My best friend is getting married in May 08 but will be buying a home with her fiance this month; October 2007. We planned on a housewarming party at their new home 3 or so weeks after they’ve finished moving in. Now a family member is saying that would not be proper etiquette but it would be fine to do a housewares shower instead and asked people to purchase gift’s off their wedding registry. I understand that people aren’t "suppossed" to move in together before the wedding, however why would the party itself be "tacky".
In my opinion the housewarming has nothing to do with the Wedding and in the event she ended up getting gifts which were on the wedding registry or even specifically asked for the purchases to be from it" She has plenty of time to remove them from teh registry to avoid duplicate gifts before the wedding in 7 months? How would that be tacky? Please help. What is the difference anyway Housewarming Party vs. Housewares Shower?

Registering for a Housewarming Party is tacky and rude. A Housewarming Party is a wonderful idea, but let people bring gifts if they want, and let them choose their own gifts. My husband and I bought a house July of 2006 and got married March of 2007. We had a housewarming party and our friends, knowing what wine lovers we are, bought us bottles and bottles of great wines! Let the wedding registry be the time to have guests purchase gifts for her, and the Housewarming Party should be gifts optional.

They are basically the same thing. The only difference is that (In my opinion) House Warming doesn’t sound as tacky. People know that she’s getting married so they will know that the registry is there. It also gives people the option of bringing bottles of wine and other more traditional housewarming gifts.

Have fun!

A housewarming is the kick-off of the house’s social life. It is NOT for furnishing the house, and it has nothing to do with the status of the couple that lives there. So there is nothing wrong with having the housewarming before the wedding.
